Student Life

During the week and on many weekends, our school is bustling with activity from morning to evening.

Activities

In our Lower School, the majority of student activities take place within the context of the class, under the direction of the class teacher. These include field trips, camping trips, swim parties, lunch fundraisers, festivals, and other celebrations. Parents/families assist with many of these activities, providing transportation, serving as chaperones, and offering general support. Generally, Fifth Grade students participate in the Pentathlon (Greek games); Sixth Graders take on the Rite of Passage; Seventh Grade students engage in Orienteering and the 5K Run; and the Eighth Grade Track Meet provides a capstone experience in Movement and Athletics for that class.

Class-based Lower School activities culminate in Eighth Grade with a series of special moments including independent student projects, a class play, the Maypole dance, an extended class trip, and the promotion ceremony.

Middle School dances for Seventh and Eighth Grades also include students from area Waldorf schools.

Stroll through the campus and you may hear young children singing while Lower School students rehearse lines or sand a stool in Woodworking. High School students frequently have classes outdoors which make use of the riparian woodlands surrounding the school. Parent-Child Program children may be discovering the beauty of our farm, and Kindergarten children may enjoy a peaceful afternoon in the Extended Care Program.

Athletics

Many middle and high school students thrive through participation in our Athletics program. Beginning in Sixth Grade, students may participate in a variety of after-school sports including volleyball, snow skiing, cross country, flag football, mountain biking, basketball, baseball, and soccer. Local schools, including the other K-8 Waldorf schools in the region, participate in weekly matches, and many seasons finish with a tournament.

Clubs

In addition to sports, many High School students join and create clubs or participate in the Student Council. These provide opportunities for leadership, exploration, and connection around shared interests. Many students get involved in various community service opportunities to help by volunteering, organizing food drives, and participating in fun-runs for local non-profit organizations.

International Exchange

We also have an active Student Exchange Program and international student admissions. Visiting exchange partners as well as international students from many different countries (including China, Guatemala, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam) are integral members and leaders of our community at SWS.
