Drama
High School Drama has a robust presence in the wider High School curriculum with all students taking Drama one quarter each year as part of their Arts rotation. In addition, Drama electives and two extracurricular plays—a Fall play and a Spring musical—are offered each year to all High School grades. Drama courses act as interdisciplinary hubs of creativity and emotional expression that supplement and extend skills and concepts arising from the broader Humanities curriculum. By exploring the place of contemporary, Shakespearean, and Ancient Greek works of dramatic literature within the multicultural and inclusive context of contemporary American society, our High School students have a strong and flexible understanding of the stories we have told about who we are both on and off the stage.
Introduction to the Theatre
The ninth grade drama class introduces the student to basic Stanislavsky acting technique as well as a working knowledge of theater vocabulary, stage directions, speech and diction, and elementary character work. Many exercises involve improvisation and movement as well as scene and monologue work. Each student performs a contemporary scene from the American canon for their final project.
Greek Drama and its Adaptations
In the tenth grade the focus is the study of classical Western dramatic structure and playwriting. Using Oedipus Rex by Sophocles as our model and the dramatic theory of Aristotle’s Poetics, in the first unit we explore the basic building blocks of Aristotelian drama. Students read, act, and analyze Sophocles’ script as well as writing their own adaptations in small groups. In the second unit, students analyze a contemporary adaptation of a Greek comedy and write their own satirical scenes.
Reinventing Shakespeare
In the eleventh grade, students take on Shakespearean tragedy and comedy through the lens of directing, studying and creating recontextualized works, dramatic compositions (inspired by Viewpoints and the work of Ann Bogart), and site specific performances. Students stage scenes in traditional settings as well as outdoors and in non-theatrical spaces around campus. In addition, students examine the role of Shakespeare’s works in modern life by reading and discussing excepts from the Pulitzer Prize winning Hamlet adaptation Fat Ham by James Ijames and other contemporary productions of Shakespeare’s works.
Senior Play
The twelfth graders’ high school experience culminates with the senior play. With two faculty members acting as advisors, students select a play to produce and perform. They are in charge of all aspects of the production, including casting, directing, stage management, costumes, set, sound, and lighting design, publicity, and more, as well as performing. It is a demanding and rewarding collaborative experience that showcases the multifaceted abilities of Waldorf students.
