Activities and Student Support


In the Lower School the majority of student activities take place within the context of the class under the direction of the class teacher. These include field trips, camping trips, swim parties, hot lunch fundraisers, festivals, and other celebrations. Parents assist with many of these activities, providing transportation, chaperons, and general support. Generally, fifth grade students participate in the Pentathlon (Greek games); sixth graders participate in Medieval Games; seventh grade students participate in Orienteering and the 5k Run; the Eighth Grade Track Meet provides a final experience in movement and athletics. Class-based lower school activities culminate in the Eighth Grade with a series of activities including student projects, a class play, the Maypole dance, an extended class trip, and graduation.

Beginning in sixth grade students may participate in a variety of after school sports, including volleyball, snow skiing, cross country, flag football, mountain biking, basketball, baseball and soccer. Local schools, including the area K-8 Waldorf schools, participate in weekly matches and many seasons culminate with a tournament. Middle School (Grades 7 and 8) dances also include students from area Waldorf schools.

Educational Support

The school honors students’ diverse learning styles and ways of being in the world; our educational support program assists students with learning, behavioral and social differences. It is a team approach led by Educational Support Coordinators (in early childhood, lower school, and high school) within a framework inspired by Kim John Payne‘s “Three Streams” work. This team approach includes teachers, parents, and outside resource providers. Faculty and professional consultants provide regular student screenings and evaluations. The student support group may recommend external evaluations/assessments, therapies, and tutoring. We follow the ADA guidelines for independent schools by offering accommodations and program modifications. If it has been previously established that your student needs educational, behavioral, or emotional support, we require disclosure during the application process. SWS will determine if our school has the appropriate resources to serve your child. Social Emotional Learning & Health

The Sacramento Waldorf School supports the healthy development of students through our Social Emotional Learning and Health Program (SEL) led by Megan Sullivan. Megan works collaboratively with our class teachers and school counselor to create a positive and helpful environment for our students.

Library Services

The Sacramento Waldorf School Library offers services to the whole school from the kindergarten to the twelfth grade, as well as to teachers, staff, parents, and teachers. The library consists of a collection of over 10,000 books as well as maps, globes, periodicals, class prints, a large art file, documentary photo file, class plays, videos and DVDs, audio tapes and CDs, slides, audio-visual equipment, and class teacher resource binders. The Library is served by a part-time assistant. Students are shown how to use an index, table of contents, a glossary, and a variety of reference books including encyclopedias and almanacs. Use of the digital catalog is also demonstrated, and how to locate books in the stacks.
